While just a few weeks ago the thought of a convertible RS5 was just a rumor, today we can show you the first spy shots of a prototype for just such a car, the 2012 Audi RS5 Cabrio.

The new model which is most likely to go on sale next summer was spotted testing close to the Nürburgring, in Germany. In this case is wearing S5 badges and the complete RS5 front with its bigger front spoiler, brakes and wider fenders. At the back however its still S5 as usuall, meaning narrower rear fenders and S-type quad exhaust pipes.

Except the automated folding soft-top, the 2012 RS5 in cabrio version should be almost identical to the RS5 coupe. If it’s so, then it will take its power from a 4.2-liter V-8 that delivers 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. This engine will be hand-built at the plant in Gyor, Hungary, being able to make the RS5 Cabrio to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in around 4.5 seconds and to an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph.

In addition to that, the upcoming model should come fitted as standard with 19-inch wheels, a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission, and quattro all-wheel drive.

Expect the RS5 Cabrio to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show next March, with sales to start shortly after.
