Report: Lamborghini to produce cars 'Daily'

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been pushing for the implementation of engravers of details of event, informally known as "black boxes" for quite some time. As specified, the EDRs would have cost approximately $5,000 to produce, which means that the cost of new cars would be worth over $5,000. Car manufacturers are not in the business of losing money and previous experience with manufacturing tells me that double cost of production before moving on with consumers is often the norm. Are willing to pay another $10,000 for your next car? Not $33,000 Honda Civic Si sound attractive, especially if the data recorded can raise insurance rates or send him to jail?


It is too early to say what will implement the NHTSA for requirements of EDR, but it is safe to assume that some form of EDR will be necessary for vehicles produced in the near future. 2011 Infiniti G25 sedan: "A journey of luxury and efficiency"

Infiniti, the luxury division of Nissan, expands its offerings with a new 2.5 liter V6 equipped G25 sedan.  The new G25 is available with standard rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
With the new G25 sedan, Infiniti broadens the appeal of the G Line with a model designed to provide an additional choice for buyers looking for a true luxury sedan, but who might not need the higher levels of performance provided by the larger engine equipped G37 models.  The G25 is well positioned in the heart of the luxury sport sedan market, bringing Infiniti’s Inspired Performance to a wider selection of buyers.
The new 2011 G25 sedan shares the same dynamic and striking seductive exterior defined by its long, wave-like aluminum hood, pushed-back raked A-pillars, aggressive, wide stance, double-arch grille with sculpted grille blades, HID bi-functional xenon headlamps, L-shaped signature G-style LED taillights, chrome trunk finisher which also functions as a lip spoiler, and dual, 4 inch wide chrome exhaust tips.  The flared fenders are nicely stuffed with standard 17X7.5 inch aluminum alloy wheels wrapped with Goodyear Eagle RSA 225/55R17in. all-season performance tires.

Besides sharing the same sporty and luxurious exterior styling as the G37, the G25 is no slouch when it comes to speed and cruising power.   It features a smaller 2.5 liter displacement, all-aluminum V6 engine featuring double overhead camshafts, VVT, and resin-coated aluminum pistons.  This small yet potent V6 engine generates 218hp and 187lb.ft. of torque, enough to get the new G25 out to 60mph from a standstill in just a little over 7-seconds.
The new G25 comes standard with Infiniti’s new 7-speed automatic transmission with DS matching modes and Downshift Rev Matching.  You can drive it in full automatic with very smooth and silent automatic shifting or move the leather wrapped stick into manual and push up to a higher gear or pull back to a lower gear.  When downshifting the gear change is perfectly rev matched for increased control and acceleration, or de-acceleration.

The new G25 also shares it big brothers fully independent suspension system for a very smooth ride with precise handling and control.  Up front is a double-wishbone setup with coil springs, gas-charged shocks and stabilizer bar.  The rear setup features multi-links, coil springs, gas-charged shocks and a stabilizer bar.  It really smoothes out poorly paved roads and slices around curving roads with ease.  This is the perfect combination that Infiniti is known for, plus the G25 gets much better fuel economy of 20mpg/city and 30mpg/highway.  These are great specs for a real luxury sport sedan that seats five people.
The new G25 also slows down with power and control thanks to large, power-assisted steel disc brakes at all four wheels.  Up front are the same G37’s 12.6 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers, and 12.1 inch vented discs clamped with single-piston calipers in the rear.  Your braking control and power is enhanced with standard ABS, EBD, BA working in conjunction with the standard Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control systems.

For years the Subaru WRX has been that ‘street-racer’ or import tuner car that some automotive enthusiasts had ‘performance envy’ over. That envy rooted from the thought of an inexpensive all-wheel-drive Japanese grocery-getter having a competitive performance edge over every-day cars just like their $60K+ sports car only for half the price. For 2011 Subaru continues that tradition in an evolutionary design that followed the current WRX hatchback but in a sedan form factor.


Subaru remains to be a leader in providing affordable vehicles built around a boxer engine and a proven symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. This combination lowers the center of gravity for better handling and initially directs power to all 4-wheels in a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear axles. My 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX Limited reminds me of the days that I drove a Honda Prelude SH. If I had this WRX, I would have been king of the streets with an ego bigger than the semi-truck sized turbo on my buddy’s 1000+ horsepower 1994 Toyota Supra. Conceiving such a vehicle that rolls off of an assembly line already competent around an autocross track, while remaining practical for getting groceries with the family.


Today, when an automotive enthusiast sees an older WRX or WRX STI rolling down the road, it is usually followed by a distinctive purring-rumble that is accustomed to its flat-4-cylinder engine. The new 2011 Impreza WRX Limited is no different, with a rather loud quad-tipped exhaust note from the factory. At times driving my WRX test vehicle, the muffler tone resonated through my chest just like a pair of nicely tuned 15-inch subwoofers would in the trunk.


Subaru didn’t take the direction of making their popular WRX soft, but instead built off of what has worked since the WRX’s introduction in 1992. The rally car characteristics still are still very alive in the new 2011 WRX. Driving the new Impreza WRX is fun and puts a smile on your face when you are able to launch the car forward from a dead-stop in a fashion unattainable by most cars on the road today. It can be truly exhilarating to drive the new WRX in addition to rowing through all 5 forward gears on an adept gearbox. On my test vehicle the clutch pedal required a bit of extra effort, possibly due to a heavier pressure plate. Oddly enough after jumping into a new WRX STI the clutch felt totally different and much softer than my test vehicle. Either way, both the STI and my WRX test vehicle drive like a champion road-going rally car.


Inside the new 2011 Subaru WRX you will notice a slight carry-over interior setup from older models. The dashboard, all-plastic, does not come off looking overly cheap due to the subtle raised molding. Things are kept simple and functional in the cabin of the WRX. The leather-trimmed performance designed seats are very supportive but do not breathe well in the summer heat. The integrated navigation, stereo, Bluetooth system is unfortunately complex and would be an option that is easy to sway away from. Especially if you could possibly save about $2,000 by passing it up. The unit leaves a lot to be wanted in terms of easy usability and its graphical interface especially when it is touch-screen based.  Not to mention, the stereo sounds bad with hardly any functional bass. You might as well let the exhaust note fill-in for your bass and let the hum of the flat-4 be your daily commute entertainment.


Safety has always been a prime objective of Subaru even before the days of traction control, tire pressure monitoring, HID headlights, vehicle dynamic control and even advanced airbag systems with side curtains which are all standard equipment on many cars sold today. The symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is one additional standard benefit of the WRX that adds to the safety factor.
The economic side of the new Impreza WRX can be a bit inconsistent, but attainable with some light right-foot driving. My best MPG figure for my time in the new WRX was about 22mpg. Because the WRX is such a blast to drive, getting the EPA estimated 25mpg on the highway would be nail biting. The WRX gets 19mpg in the city which I had no problem matching.


Over-all ride and comfort is decent, considering the forgiving long traveling suspension. The WRX is a car that you would not be afraid to take off-road. I was so preoccupied with having fun on the road I ran out of time and eventually gas too. The 2.5-liter turbocharged boxer engine is eager to rev into the high RPMs. You get a massive surge of power above 4500 RPM and you better be quick on the shift or you will surely hit the rev-limiter in the blink of an eye if you are not paying attention. All-wheel-drive will ensure that you are not barking the wheels even if they are snow tires on dry pavement.


Rally inspired yet road-capable in virtually any situation you can throw at it on paved surfaces. That is the 2011 Impreza WRX in a nutshell, which is something that is still desired by not only diehard automotive enthusiasts, but those looking for economical, functional, and fun transportation.


The new 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX starts at just $25,495. My WRX Limited edition had an as-tested price of $31k, including a $2,000 optional in-dash touch-screen GPS navigation/stereo system. The 305-horsepower WRX STI starts at $33,995.

2012 Camaro V6 gets more power, better fuel economy

The last project of the tuning firm is based on the theme of "make everything with no restrictions." The result is the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 and the project is called quite appropriate as the project "ballistic".

The style of the "Ballistic" Murcielago also decreased in the package, used on the premier 4509. Package includes the new bumper, rear spoiler and rear diffuser. SR Auto Group finishes the look with a matte black exterior finish and a new set of wheels of 20 inch pure design 2WO. For the engine, the company used the 6.5 l V12 engine that offers 631 HP at 8000 rpm and 487 lb - ft @ 6000 RPM.

When Acura and Marvel collide

It is an undeniable fact that films and product placement go together like peas and carrots.  Peanut butter and jelly.  Unicorns and glitter (just kidding).  These days, when the half pay salaries of my week, or roughly the GDP of a small nation underdeveloped, watch a movie, expect to be bombarded with a barely veiled advertisement to buy something or another.  Often, intelligently integrated into a scene as a character through a new cell phone flip-cam, or eat at a restaurant for certain.  I remember seeing Twister and taking note of the "bad guys" in his caravan bright, elegant long of black…Dodge Caravan (see what you did, Marketing Department).  It seems modern creators of the film are taken a step further.  Thor, which was released recently, including the training of all Acura and makes no bones about it.


Going so far as to advertise specifically the Acura place in the movie (not the movie itself), several commercials were released before the Prime Minister.  A press kit disguised as a "examen" Shield would be more at home in the rack of your local Acura dealer brochure.  (S.H.I.E.L.D., of the non-Marvel-geeks like me, is a spy agency and the implementation of the fictitious act in the Marvel Universe where Thor came from.)  A few months ago had read a story that the big it would be the "official" car of the film, but I think that I was a little surprised when I started to see how her sold through commercials and ads on the internet.


As the guy at your local local that pulls up in an import tuner riced, wore the bolting hair, gold chains and a white tracksuit, the full court press - only made me shake my head and regretted the "stop epic"", Mr. Try demasiado-resistente".  It is true, I'm the kind of cynical, but I was wondering if Acura would have felt the need to be so flagrantly if its last redesign has been most welcome.  Do you know, one with the grid of chrome that has been called everything from a peak to a guillotine for a bagel slicer?  Yes, that one.


I am curious to know if the general population (read: those who do not live and breathe exhaust, which explains much reach I think well) is still aware of how far the cache of the Acura has fallen in recent years.  As a leading brand Honda, tenders have been extremely polarized or soft as simple oats covered with weak sauce.  Worse still, cars have been lacking in this important intangible diversión-a - factor drive that used to make the company shine above most others.  Many have asked why should pay for the "acura" identification plate when a fully loaded Honda can often offer the same level of luxury touches for less green.  Valid questions, all.  Are these reasons why decided cool their cars more difficult than a MOM's stage in the contest of Miss Priss slightly Acura?  Or just pass an excellent opportunity to score and are milking for all worth the penalty?  I guess that it's for the demographic target to decide with their accounts of Treasury, in the improvement of the sales of the Acura.


For what it's worth, cheered sound when the ZDX and its prominent Horn were destroyed in glorious, IMAX 3D (though I do not think earned the additional penalty of $5 per ticket).

The new Honda Civic if evidence InsideLine

I have a confession to: the outgoing civic was one of my favorite cars, especially in its price. The performance was reasonable and management halfway decent, but the driving experience was always greater than the sum of its parts. The car was faster and more agile which really, and the six-speed used by Honda was the soft enters the market, in any price range. If Honda can put a soft and precise of the gearbox in a car of $23,000, why can Porsche in a car stickers for five times the price? When Honda announced that they were dropping the engine 2.4 litres of Acura TSX in Si civic of 2012, I thought it would be a good car remarkably better. If not I have driven new Civic Si still, so that now we will have to go with the views of the Edmund InsideLine, until you see his video review below.





On paper, the difference between 2011 and 2012 civic is is not so impressive. The new car picks up four horsepower, but win 31 foot-pounds of torque. That translates into higher performance, but the difference is not as important as expected, especially from 2012 if it is lighter than the 2011 version 18 pounds. By way of example, the civic SI of 2011 managed to sprint from 0-60 in 7.1 seconds; 2012 car makes it in 6.9 seconds, only 0.2 seconds faster. The transition to VTEC is that less pronounced in the new car, to the point where Honda includes a series of LEDs to show that VTEC is attractive. Interestingly, fuel economy is by 2012, and the Civic Si now gets a combined city highway average of 25 mpg (1 mpg better than last year).


The Civic if it has always been about the experience of driving, not on how specifications play on a sheet of paper. Many people disagree Honda lately to get away from their fans, but it may reserve judgment until I have an opportunity to promote the new if civic. If it is as good as the last of them, there may be hope for Honda still.

New Mercedes - Benz SLS AMG Roadster caught testing "undisguised".

The first global model SLS AMG Roadster from Mercedes - Benz is scheduled in 2011 at the Frankfurt Show. The company well released a few teasers in the interval which depicts a prototype hidden during testing.

Cup of Gullwing door and car roadster variants were built at the same time. Structural differences between the two models were therefore easy for engineers to keep in mind. This is the reason why the open top model is lighter. The weight of the shell of body in the case of the Roadster is 536 pounds or 246 kg while the Cup is 5 pounds or less 2.3 kg.

The same engine - the 6.2 litre V8 is mounted on the roadster and the Coupe. The energy produced by the unit is 571 hp in the European specification and 563 hp in the specification of North America. The engine is mounted just to the rear of the front axle with the dual clutch transmission system seven speed providing power to the rear wheels.

2011 Cadillac CTS - V Coupe review & try: 'A rapid rise to the top'

A little over six years ago Cadillac set out to reclaim its tarnished reputation as one of the premier luxury and performance driven brands in the automobile marketplace.  With the addition of the all-new 2011 CTS-V 2+2 coupe, Cadillac has once again achieved world-class sport coupe status in design, build quality, luxury, technology, super-high-performance capabilities and safety.  This all-new CTS-V coupe does it all and more.
The all-new CTS-V coupe combines the all-new V6 powered CTS coupe’s dramatic and unique design with the 556hp supercharged V8 engine from the CTS-V sedan.  The result is a world-class luxury sports coupe aimed at drivers who want racecar design cues, lots of luxury and supercar performance.
The design is dramatic from any angle and truly unique.  The CTS-V coupe has classic hardtop styling with no conventional B-pillar, the touch-pad operation for the doors removes the need for conventional door handles (borrowed from the C6 Corvette), thus creating a technical, clean profile.  The windshield is laid at a faster 62.3-degrees, and a long, nearly horizontal backglass area combine to create a dramatic profile that is only 55.9 inch high.  Those fender vents are working and help extract the heat generated by the 6.2 liter supercharged engine.  The lower side extensions give the car a lower center of gravity enhancing stability.

At the rear is a sculpted mesh lower grille, a center outlet exhaust with twin, 4 inch wide tips that pass through the fascia and trimmed in chrome, signature vertical LED taillights with LED light pipes to increase visibility to the vehicles following at night, a rear spoiler integrated into the signature center high-mounted LED stop lamp and a sculpted roof-mounted antenna for ONSTAR and XM satellite radio.
The unique front fascia features ‘Bentley-styled’ silver mesh grille that doubles the car’s air intake volume, an important enabler for its high-performance capabilities.  Vertical HID headlamp cluster also feature a LED light pipe and down below cut into the fender are projector beam foglamps.  Next to each foglamp are inlets leading directly to the front brakes to keep them cool during very spirited driving times.  Down below the front bumper is a custom design splitter to increase front downforce at very high supercar speeds. The new V-coupe also features a raised center section of the hood that provides clearance for the supercharger.

The new V-coupe rolls on big 19X9 inch front and 19X9.5 inch forged alloy wheels wrapped with sticky Michelin 255/40ZR19 front and 285/35ZR19 inch rear Pilot Sport PS2 low-profile high-performance tires specifically developed by Michelin for the V-coupe.
The new Cadillac Art & Science design lab design of the car is truly amazing making the car stand out in a crowd of other super-high-performing 2+2 coupes from the world’s greatest auto manufacturers.
Under the galvanized steel sheet metal is where the extra-ordinary power and performance lies.  Power for the V-Series Coupe comes from Cadillac’s LSA 6.2 liter supercharged and intercooled V8 engine rated 556hp at 6,100rpm and a ground-shaking 551lb.ft. of torque at just 3,800rpm.  The LSA engine features an intercooled 1.9 liter Eaton supercharger/intercooler system, premium aluminum-alloy cylinder heads and numerous details designed to ensure it makes its power as quietly and smoothly as possible.  The supercharger has a unique four-lobe rotor design that enhances quietness while also optimizing the performance parameters of the engine.
The torque’s twist is what turns the wheels and the 551lb.ft. of torque is one of the highest of any supercar on the market, more than the Bentley Continental GT, Aston-Martin DBS, Porsche 911 Turbo, Maserati Grand Turismo, or the Ferrari 612 Scaglletti, all 2+2 coupes.

All of the V-coupe’s torque is channel to the rear wheels either via the short-throw, smooth shifting standard Tremec dual-clutch TR6060 manual transmission with rev-matching ability, or through the optional Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic with paddle-shift control that blip matches rpm’s during downshifting.  Performance Algorithm Shifting is part of the 6L90’s programming and provides a performance-oriented shift pattern during sustained high-performance driving.  My test CTS-V coupe came with the Tremec 6060 gearbox and it was magnificent, quickly and precisely going up or down the gears.  Power is put down on the pavement through a limited-slip differential.
What a treat to so easily control my acceleration on the freeways and mountain roads.  You want speed from this supercar?  How about 0-60mph in under 4 seconds, the quarter-mile covered in just 12.3 seconds at 117.7 at 117.7 mph, and a top speed of 195 mph with no mph limiter.  That’s fast, super-car fast!
Controlling all of this power and torque on the road and reaching elite levels of road- holding performance, but also maintaining the poise and ride of a luxury car in ‘regular’ driving conditions, is the awesome unique fully independent suspension system.  The technical enabler of that dual-mode driving character is Cadillac’s landmark Magnetic Ride Control.  It is the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology.  It uses shocks controlled by advanced magneto-rheological, rather than mechanical valves, to greatly accelerate response time and precision.  Electronic sensors at all four wheels literally ‘read the road’ every millisecond, making constant adjustments to damping to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions.  The Magnetic Ride shocks also enable a broader range of damping control to optimize the ride and handling for all driving conditions.  You have two modes-tour and sport, enabling you to tailor the suspension for grand touring or more spirited performance driving when the time and place is right.  Adding to the precision and ride quality of the suspension is the front and rear setup.  Up front is a SLA (short/long arm) setup with a 29mm hollow stabilizer bar, elastomeric handling and ride bushings and 65 N/mm coil springs.  The rear features a SLA (short/long arm) setup with a 25.4mm solid stabilizer bar, elastomeric trailing arm bushing and 90 N/mm coil spring rates.  The front suspension has a direct-mount cradle and the rear suspension a rubber isolated cradle to increase rigidity and lesson noise, vibration and harshness.

It is truly incredible as the ride is super smooth on the blacktop freeways, and cutting-edge slicing and dicing through steep corners in the mountains.  Cadillac’s StabilTrak also comes standard to keep you on your chosen path but you can shut it down by pushing a steering wheel mounted buttons to let the rear hang out in curves and quicken your heartbeat even further.  On the skid pan the new CTS-V coupe pulls 0.93g’s.
The excellent ZF Servotronic II power-assisted rack & pinion steering system is superb at guiding you where you want the V-coupe to go with incredible speed and precision.  Further enhancing the steering system’s ability is a wide, one-piece aluminum strut tower brace fitted over the engine.
World-class acceleration and speed sometimes has to slow down and Cadillac engineers worked with world-class brake manufacturer Brembo to design and engineer a braking system to safely and quickly slow the V-coupe down from speed.  Brembo fits dual-cast (combining cast iron and aluminum) 6-piston calipers up front and 4-piston calipers in the rear grabbing 15.1 inch vented rotors up front and 14.7 inch vented rotors in the rear.  Braking power and control are further enhanced with standard ABS, BA and Dynamic Rear Brake Proportioning.  Braking power from 60mph to 0mph in just 108ft.

All parameters of what makes up a true supercar lie under the skin of the all-new CTS-V coupe and Cadillac takes it further by giving you an interior that perfectly mixes real racecar cues with true luxury amenities and comfort.
Open the doors and you see a long aluminum ‘V’ door kick plate welcoming you aboard.
The small, sporty, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, seat inserts and shifter are covered in microfiber, just like in a racecar providing the luxurious character of suede without suede’s inherent drawbacks of difficult care and moisture sensitivity.  Microfiber gives an excellent grip on the wheel, shifter and keeps you in place during high speed maneuvers.  My test CTS-V coupe came with the awesome, optional Recaro performance driving seats that provided me with excellent support during spirited driving.  These 14-way powered seats include pneumatic bolster controls in the seat cushions and backrests, are heated/cooled with power lumbar adjustments.  My test CTS-V coupe also came with the genuine Midnight Sapele Wood Trim on the instrument panel, center console and door trim.  Leather is found on the top of the dashboard, center console, and top section of the doors along with plenty of chrome trim giving the CTS-V a more luxurious look and feel inside.  Sitting back and adjusting the Recaro bucket seat is a breeze and when you look straight-ahead you see the chrome bezel instrument cluster with the 200mph speedometer, 8,000rpm tachometer, fuel gauge, engine coolant temperature and boost gauge.  The electronic computer readout in the middle will give you information on all of the vital systems plus your current g-force, tour-sport mode selection, etc.  All of the switches, dials and levers are within easy reach and fully illuminated for safe nighttime travel.

Better last hurrah for the racing: ALF vs GT-R, 911 GT2 RS, ZR1, F430 GT3

The disappearance of best motoring international Japan - series of videos of hot version was almost as sad as when Toyota halted production of the Supra in 1998. The good news is that sometimes legends are difficult.


Racing better puts together a final race pitting the top Supercars today one against the other. These cars consist of the new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Ferrari F430 GT3, Lexus LFA, Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 GT2 RS. 2011 Mercedes SLS AMG to medical emergency vehicle

Mercedes unveiled their new SLS AMG emergency vehicle - the 2011 RETTmobil event the largest European exhibition mobility and rescue. The event took place between the 11th till May 13.

Not a large part of the study of design details are yet known, but the images that have been released by the company to be silver coloured SLS AMG the German word "notarzt" which includes along its side. This word means "Emergency" in English. For the combination of red and blue colour which is associated with the emergency situation, a blue light beams and Red accent paint exterior car. There are emergency equipment allegedly deposited up to the Interior of the car, although there is doubt whether the car has enough space to accommodate a stretcher in the back.

Presumably so closely that the fit engine would be a unit 6.3 litre V8 which develops 571 hp and 479 lb ft of torque that is found in the standard model of the company. The figures of power is also considered sufficient for emergency vehicles. There is of course the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-Polizia which was reveled return in 2009, which can be used as an element of comparison engine did.

The new Chevrolet Volt is one of the most talked about vehicles today.  After spending countless hours behind the wheel of one, I completely understand why. The new 2011 Chevrolet Volt just may be ‘the car’ that helps set a new trend towards weaning us off of our abundant dependency of oil in the United States.


Even though the Chevrolet Volt is a technological marvel of today, tomorrow it may be that one stepping stone which paved the way for something greater.  This car may possibly be the one setting in motion the chance that majority of vehicles sold will consume very little fuel. Until then, the Chevrolet Volt starts its life as a hot commodity for all things eco-friendly and gas saving.


I had the opportunity to review the Chevrolet Volt for a week. During my time with the Volt I attempted to put it through its paces in every imaginable circumstance that I could conjure up on the sunny streets of north Florida. I have to say after my experience I walked away from the Volt pleasantly surprised and at the same time scratching my head. Since you are probably wondering about the scratching my head part, let me explain that first.


The new Chevrolet Volt encompasses a different style that contrasts every other gas and hybrid-variant vehicle on the road today. This contrast is obviously due to the Volt’s drivetrain that consists of two robust electric motors putting out a combined 150-horsepower/273 pound-feet of torque responsible for propulsion and brief periods of battery regeneration and its generator, a 1.4-liter gasoline engine. Acting as a power source for the electric motor, is the 1.4-liter 80hp 4-cylinder gasoline engine, which requires premium fuel. The gasoline engine acts solely as a generator to passively and actively charge the battery so that the Volt’s electric motor has a steady flow of electricity. The electric motors provide instant torque, which means all 273 foot-pounds of torque is available at any time. This makes moving all 4,533 pounds from a standstill an easy task allowing the Volt to go from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 8.9 seconds.


There have been many lengthy discussions among automotive journalists and experts about whether or not the Volt’s gasoline engine provides any direct power to the wheels and to quickly answer that question from my own research, I would have to say, yes it does.


To better understand the complex nature of the Chevrolet Volt, (how the gas engine only provides a small percentage of direct power via the planetary gear-set and electric motor above 70mph at times near full depletion of the battery), one would first need to have the capacity to understand a rocket scientist. At the same time, they would need to interpret a new foreign language. In other words, all of the answers can be found with a simple Google search and some technical thinking. Doing this research would also question if the Volt should be classified as a hybrid vehicle, plug-in hybrid, or extended range electric vehicle. If you go out and drive a Volt, you would probably come to the conclusion that it is mostly an extended range electric vehicle. Basically, the Volt can be whatever the heck you want it to be until it comes time to collect the $7,500 Chevy Volt federal tax credit, which will apply to plug-in-electric cars.


With everything previously mentioned taken into consideration, the Chevy Volt drives and behaves like an electric car. Things get complex underneath the skin,  but it is easy to void out the complexity when you are able to just jump in the Volt and drive anywhere you want without any electric-vehicle range anxiety.


The Chevy Volt has a small gas tank and for good reason. Only 9.3 gallons of fuel is needed to give a fully charged Volt the “extended” range of over 370 miles. I was able to get exactly 34 miles out of a fully charged battery during a normal driving commute consisting of about 40% city and 60% highway. A second run, after charging the Volt’s 16 kWh Lithium-ion battery via the included 120-volt charger overnight, I was able to get 28 miles using my heavy right-foot and utilization of the A/C in comfort mode. Putting the A/C in eco mode would decrease energy consumption allowing a longer range.


You may be tempted to start conserving power use unconsciously after you have performed a charge on the volt.


I know because I did this just trying to get a “feel” of things and how the Volt’s power management all comes together. Full electric mode is selected automatically anytime the battery is charged enough to sustain driving without the gas engine’s assistance. All of the accessories play a part in depleting the battery from the headlights to the air conditioner. Because the air conditioner draws a considerable amount of power, especially during extreme outside temps, the Volt provides an energy efficiency monitor.  How efficient your driving style is will also be displayed through the energy monitor to aid in a driver’s ability to monitor energy consumption.


When it comes to giving the driver enough information to successfully manage charging and over-all consumption, Chevrolet covered all angles. The information display via the center-stack LCD touch-screen is a virtual gateway into the brain of the Volt. Not only can you display how efficient you are driving, but you can get an instant ETA as to when your battery would be fully charged using either the included 120v charger or the optional 240v charging station. It took about 9 hours to complete an overnight charge.  This gave me enough juice to drive 35 miles with no noticeable power loss. My average “gas-only” runs yielded 37mpg to 42mpg. Steadily driving with a fully depleted battery you notice times when the engine will hum along with the expected buzz sound from a small 4-cylinder engine. Combined electric-only and gas trips sometimes averaged to around 164mpg. Calculating and taking into consideration the amount that you would spend on charging the Volt overnight, you could considerably save a lot of gas money. If your daily commute is under 35 to 40 miles, the Volt hardly ever uses gas. These are times that the Volt will automatically burn gas just to keep things circulating and eventually forcing you to put gas in the tank. You probably already know that going months on end without firing up a gas engine can cause issues in the long run.


It is rather funny to hear the engine rev up and then level-off at a much lower RPM while driving a steady 70mph as the system recoups a temporary battery charge. The Volt cleverly manages to always have enough stored energy in the battery to give you 100% of the electric motor’s power. The only time that this “reserve” power is in jeopardy is climbing mountains which is why Chevrolet provides a mountain mode which will run the engine more frequently creating a larger buffer-charge. This extra charge or flow of energy would be needed when a mountain climb causes an extended load on the electric motor.


The Volt is virtually silent when running in full-electric mode. At times I found pedestrians walking in front of the Volt when cruising through parking lots because they simply could not hear it. Luckily the high-beam headlight flasher will also sound the horn in several abrupt pulses to get the attention of someone not paying attention. Once again, another useful feature that is specific to the Volt’s unique character.


On the inside of the Chevrolet Volt is another untraditional characteristic; 4-passenger seating. Most 4-passenger vehicles carry a hefty price tag and are usually considered to be luxury vehicles. In the Volt’s case, it must sit its precious cargo in 4 individual bucket seats mainly due to its battery design. The T-shape 400 pound battery runs down the middle of the car ending at the rear under the hatch cargo area. Seating space is good but those looking to pack-up a family of four for a week-long trip may have difficulty fitting all of their belongings in the small 10.6 cubic-feet of space. Aside from the cargo area, all 4 seats are comfy and provide ample support for even 6-foot tall adults. The dashboard makes the Volt very different from any other GM vehicle. The center stack buttons are mostly touch-sensitive, sometimes a bit too sensitive. You will also find a nicely integrated 7-inch touch-screen LCD for navigation, stereo, energy monitor and an optional back-up camera. On the driver side, there is a large LCD screen for all pertinent information to the driver, which comes with some customizable views. All of the colors are vibrant in the driver’s LCD info screen, possibly showcasing more of a “green” aspect of the Volt.


The new Chevrolet Volt is conservatively designed with a stylish edge. Unlike some EVs, hybrids, and plug-in hybrids, the Volt brings a common passenger car style to the table, which is a good thing. The Volt only subtly sets itself off from other normal gas-burning cars. The Volt actually looks good to the majority. Everything about the Volt works in tandem from its styling and innovative electric-gas drivetrain, to the low-rolling resistance tires, and 17-inch light-weight forged aluminum wheels. It all comes together in an intricate package that could potentially appease anyone in the market for either a hybrid or plug-in gas-electric vehicle.


After having spent a week with the new Chevy Volt, I walked away knowing with a certainty, that General Motors made a masterpiece out of a clean “green” sheet of paper. This masterpiece carries several expectations, but I feel confident that it will fulfill most of them while venturing into the realm of an unpredicted electric and hybrid vehicle future. After-all, it is the 2011 North American Car of the Year.

In the interest of full disclosure, I acknowledge that I am not a typical automotive journalist.  I did not test new vehicles of fleet of press, not evaluate a new home each week and most of my knowledge comes from my own extensive research and a bit of experience in the real world.  Call me a journo Chair, as I imagine that many fans that.  Often I can not see the shiny new toys close and personal, not mention they have in my hands.  Being naturally skeptical, I often wonder how close my reality are many tests of car.
You can see, at the end of the day that I am a MOM of work that happens to the love of cars, with practical to consider for my next vehicle issues.  I am not yet at the point where I can choose what they want, but that should rather choose what best fits the demands of life at this time.  Budget, space and maintenance all costs must take precedence over the "fun to drive" factor despite would rather be the other way around.  And so, I have often felt that I'll have to compromise my next set of wheels.

Consider my expectations obsolete, at least.  I often wonder if some automotive writers have become jaded over the years, after having driven by so many wonderful machines.  What, I wonder what someone in the "real world" think of it.  What is in their daily conduct, not on a closed track?  The first thing I noticed was the brakes were quite delicate and it didn't take much gas for the car to move.  I traffic waiting of the floor and it was pleasantly greeted with a burst of speed.  The next thing was to be considered in the road where not had any problem in combination with these countries 80 mph, and the e downshifted happy when I needed to spend some crawlers.
At this point, it was the deporte-cambio but has set back from 6 - up to upshift, to downshift.  Seems logical, but nothing of what was used for.  Another thing that is not used to was two marches rather than normally.  Slushbox or not, six-speed, no doubt helped to make it more fun.  He took the curved ramp caution not to know how they would respond to the tires, but they held their own.  Not on smooth Rails as the Speed3 but definitely minimal body roll and never felt out of control (the ESC may have been help here…my 6 doesn't and I am not accustomed to cars that do).

It doesn't note more sweet sound of exhaust and the Horn creates a friendly "Mir!" when click, but in the grand scheme of things the considerations of anyway I think is important.  HIDs are the only option that is missing from my wish list.  If buy it, it would probably be limited with nav (in red Allure, please).  I understand that it is not a comparison of apples to apples, but me has come to the Elantra and Si civic 2012.  Still think test if an a day, of course, but I've been most impressed with the e.  I guess it has to be a good car when you are sad to become a rent of base model which smells of old cooking oil, right?  If you are looking for power and RWD then obviously this is not for you.  But if you need to replace your old Civic or Corolla (or even "reduce" from a more big car if you don't have the space), want something decent gas mileage and see your car as something more than a device, I definitely recommend the new Elantra.   Now, if only it could launch an a R-Spec turbo, distinctive and sell it here would be established for the next ten years.
