2011 Toyota Avalon limited review: affordable luxury

Toyota has introduced a newly redesigned Avalon for 2011 incorporating silky smooth V6 power and a spacious cabin that evokes subtle elegance. The newly styled Avalon combines practicality while offering a soft luxury feel to driving Toyota’s largest sedan. The outside is distinctively styled bringing a fresh new look to the front and rear fascia.

The new 2011 Toyota Avalon is sometimes referred to as the “Buick” of Toyota. Anyone thinking that very thing would not be too far off of the boat considering the new Avalon has a soft, (but well damped over large bumps), suspension that could literally put you to sleep on the highway. As you can imagine, handling is not the Avalon’s forte, but being a full-sized practical sedan is.

The Avalon now comes in just two trim levels, the base Avalon and the Avalon Limited. All Avalons come equipped with leather seats, eight-way power driver seat, backup camera, dual-zone climate, moonroof and 17-inch alloy wheels. My Limited trimmed test vehicle included cooled/heated front leather bucket seats, rain-sensing variable-speed wipers and smart-key (unlocks the doors with the touch of the door handle or locks with a push of the door handle button) with push button start. My test vehicle was also equipped with an optional voice-activated touch-screen navigation system and JBL Synthesis stereo. The sound from stereo system was decent with clear audio coming from all 12 speakers. Bluetooth music streaming was also included on my test vehicle allowing me to seamlessly sync my iPhone’s music and phone dialing/answering functions.

You may catch a few distinctive design changes on the outside of the new 2011 Avalon, such as the new self-leveling projector HID headlights. The Avalon continues a tradition of having a long wheelbase of 111-inches. In a way the new 2011 Avalon has a sportier look than earlier models. At one time, many consumers thought the Avalon was specifically targeting buyers of Buicks but I can honestly say those who want a slightly bigger Camry may find the Avalon appeasing.

The new front bumper now has fog lights trimmed in chrome accents with an extremely wide illumination. If Toyota was ever targeting the middle aged to older demographic, then they will have no problems in that area. With forward illumination at night between the HID projector lamps and wide-angle fog lights this may make our Avalon more enticing. The low-slung side skirts of the Avalon give it a lowered stance appearance. The doorsill chrome strips add a luxury appeal as does the flat trunk.

Inside of the large 106.4 cubic-feet passenger volume cabin you will find a contemporary feel and design. The wide long-running dashboard gives away to a big-car vibe to everything you see up front. The plastic trim pieces are not cheap but unfortunately they are not expensive either, after you start getting all feely-touchy with the new Avalon. This is even more apparent with the faux wood trim. Let’s just say mediocrity still overtakes the Avalon’s dashboard with the exception of a few elements such as the newly styled gauge cluster and center-stack LCD touch screen. The controls and dials are clearly marked making it easy to operate basic vehicle functions. The new Optitron gauges with white needles are easy to read in the daytime and night.

Rear seating volume is plentiful, providing almost 41-inches of legroom and comfortable perforated leather seating surfaces.  Even with the front seats fully adjusted out, rear passengers still have plenty of room.

Toyota has such a tradition of building reliable family oriented sedans that cars like the Camry and new Avalon can be called ‘driving appliances’. The cabin of my new Avalon test vehicle was extremely quiet with no rattles or foreign sounds what-so-ever. The soft suspension is a bit too ‘bouncy’ for my taste, but those looking for an affordable full-sized sedan may find the Avalon’s ride to be just fine. Take the Avalon into a turn too hot and you are quickly reminded that this vehicle was simply not designed for spirited driving.

The 268 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque V6 engine provides plenty of power. If you lay down your right foot, you get a surge of power, which will quickly engage the traction control to intervene as the front wheels begin to lose traction. Torque steer is another concern outside of the Avalon’s limited sports-car-like handling abilities. The smooth 3.5-liter V6 is overly eager to inject enough power for the 6-speed transmission to direct more power to one front wheel than the other. It would be wise to keep both hands on the steering wheel under wide-open-throttle or you could end up putting this 3,616 pound sedan in a ditch.

0-60mph times come in a surprising 6.2 seconds. Luckily the Avalon still manages to get 20mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway, and you do not have to pay extra for premium fuel. I saw a consistent 24mpg during my daily commutes to the office, which is a mixture of highway and light-traffic city driving. The 2011 Avalon is certified as an ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle).

Steering feel is somewhat light and neutral providing very little feedback from the road. This gives you a smooth ride over poorly paved roads. The Avalon’s brakes are firm and eager to stop the vehicle. You can feel the electronic brake force distribution during panic stops with very little noticeable fade when they are heated up.

The new 2011 Avalon continues a tradition in providing several standard safety features such as driver and front passenger airbags, seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags in front and rear, driver’s knee airbag, side-impact door beams, front/rear crumple zones, tire pressure monitor, daytime running lights, front seat load limiters/pretensioners, and seat anchors for child car seats.

The new 2011 Toyota Avalon Limited ventures into its already-familiar luxury car territory once again now with an even better styled full-sized luxury-car demeanor. A wider stance, broad shoulders and an integrated rear spoiler bring a new athleticism to Malibu and give it a more aggressive appearance. The new Malibu has a 4.5-inch (114 mm) shorter wheelbase and 62-inch (1,574 mm) front and rear tracks that are more than 2 inches (51 mm) wider than the model it replaces.

Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element taillamps. The look is complemented by a range of large 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The new Malibu exterior is anticipated to be SAE-certified as one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in the segment, with a coefficient of drag (Cd) rating near Chevrolet Volt’s Cd of .280. Because of Malibu’s new shape and design, engineers were able to remove 60 counts of wind drag compared to the model it replaces.

Malibu also has electronically controlled and integrated active aero shutters (select models in North American markets) to improve aerodynamics and enhance fuel economy without sacrificing the exterior design.

Malibu’s active shutter system automatically closes airflow through the lower intake opening when air intake is least needed. When closed, the shutter system enhances aerodynamic performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. Whether the shutter is open or closed depends on engine coolant temperature and speed – for example, the shutters open when the car is traveling up a hill, pulling a trailer, or in hot city driving; the shutters close at highway speeds when less engine cooling is required.

The new Malibu interior was designed to bring an element of sophistication to everyday driving, featuring an all-new dual cockpit design that creates an inviting, roomy and comfortable environment.

The increased width of the new Malibu means a more spacious cabin. Compared to the previous model, it has nearly 4 cubic feet (113 L) of additional interior volume, along with more shoulder and hip room.

The Malibu interior features metallic, chrome or wood accents located around the shifter, surrounding the center stack, around the instrument cluster and on doors and the steering wheel. Soft, ice blue ambient lighting reflects off of and complements chrome accents and ensures even, consistent illumination along the instrument panel and in storage pockets. Ice blue lighting on the center stack dials, exposed ice blue French contrast stitching, soft-touch and textured surfaces, and strategic applications of noise-deadening materials add to Malibu’s interior refinement.

The Malibu also has a number of storage areas, including a radio face that articulates up and down to reveal a six-inch deep storage area behind its seven-inch touch-screen radio display – a U.S. first in a midsize car. Malibu will also offer a full range of the latest infotainment options, including new color radio systems and an available navigation system.

Malibu will include Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment package at launch. It builds on the safety and security of OnStar and seamlessly integrates online services like Pandora® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®. All-new 2.5L powertrain

The 2013 Malibu features a global lineup of fuel-efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines that complements its European-inspired driving characteristics.

An all-new Ecotec 2.5L dual overhead cam, four-cylinder engine with direct injection leads Malibu’s engine lineup in North America. It is expected to be one of the most efficient of its size in the market. New features include enhanced authority continuously variable valve timing, variable-displacement oil pump and electronic thermostat that save fuel, while delivering V-6-like performance. It is estimated the engine will be SAE-certified at more than 190 horsepower (141 kW) and 180 lb.-ft. of torque (245 Nm). The new engine has noise-reducing features such as a cast exhaust manifold, steel crank, low-noise timing chain and direct mount accessories that contribute to a quiet-cabin experience.

The 2.5L is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic with features designed to enhance powertrain efficiency. 2012 Volkswagen Beetle Revealed

Volkswagen has revealed the new 2012 Beetle which is set to debut as the Shanghai Auto Show and then hit the floor of the New York Auto Show later this week.

Engine choices for the 2012 VW Beetle will be a 200-hp 2.0-liter TFSI engine, 170-hp 2.5-liter 5-cylinder or a gas sipping 140-hp TDI (turbo diesel) with 236 pound-feet of torque. Power from the engine choices will be directed to the front wheels through a 6-speed manual or 6-speed dual-clutch (DSG).

Automotive Icon Gets a Major 21st Century Update

Wolfsburg / Shanghai / Berlin / New York – When the first Beetle rolled off the production line, it was called simply the Volkswagen — “the people’s car” — but its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe: Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino or ???! In total, 21.5 million cars were sold.

More than 60 years later, in 1998, the “New Beetle” rekindled the spirit and imagination of the original to a new generation of Volkswagen owners. The second generation version sparked another round of uplifting and joyous enthusiasm known as Beetle Mania.

Today, the Beetle opens a new chapter in its remarkable story. The third generation of the internationally beloved Beetle is celebrating a transcontinental world debut simultaneously in Shanghai, Berlin and New York.

Updating an icon

Only someone who knows and respects the Beetle’s heritage could produce a new generation of this storied vehicle. The task for Volkswagen engineers was clear. They had to develop a modern interpretation of the Beetle, with all the benefits of today’s technologies and efficiencies, and the driving characteristics that define the Volkswagen brand. The result had to remain affordable and stay true to the Beetle’s spirit and great heritage.

The design of the new Beetle presented another challenge. How does one reinvent a look that is so recognizable and unique? Volkswagen Group Design Chief Walter de Silva and Volkswagen Brand Design Chief, Klaus Bischoff, welcomed the task and set an ambitious objective: “Design a new original!”

The designers wanted to develop the new car around the earliest Beetle profile rather than the 1998 New Beetle. They wanted a car that respects the past but looks toward the future. And that is what they created.

Exterior

The 2012 Beetle is an automotive icon reinvented. Placing the original Beetle and the 21st Century Beetle next to one another, it’s clear that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical, but the overall look is bolder and more dynamic. The Beetle also breaks free of the design geometry defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it).

“The Beetle is now characterized by a clean, self-confident and dominant sportiness. The car not only has a lower profile; it is also substantially wider, the front hood is longer, the front windshield is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. All of this creates a new dynamism,” explains Klaus Bischoff.

The 2012 Beetle is 71.2 inches wide (3.3 inches wider), 58.5 inches tall (.5 inches lower) and 168.4 inches long (6 inches longer). The new focal point is the C-pillar. The development team also increased the car’s track widths and wheelbase. All of this gives the Beetle a powerful appearance with muscular tension.

Another feature is the rear spoiler that is integrated into the design (standard on 2.0L TSI engines with 200 hp). The top surface of the rear spoiler is black, while the underside is painted in body color.

The Beetle is sportier, offering both turbo-charged TDI® Clean Diesel and turbo-charged gasoline engines, in addition to dual exhaust, performance-handling packages, 19-inch wheels, sport seats and new, sleeker styling. Volkswagen will offer a panoramic roof, a range of audio options, including the Fender® Premium Audio System, and a customization program for the 2012 Beetle with a large number of personalization options, including a wide variety of colors and wraps along with an annual theme model.

Interior

The 21st Century Beetle offers an agile, driver-oriented coupe experience with a quality of materials that goes beyond all class limits. The car’s styling, ergonomics and quality interact to create a new, friendly car with a highly individual nature.

The shape and use of color in the painted or carbon-look dashboards harkens back to the design of the first Beetle.

Three round instrument gauges are arranged in front of the driver (tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge) providing all key information at a glance. A multifunction display is integrated in the speedometer in middle position. The steering wheel is specially designed with optional painted accents in the spokes depending on the equipment line.

Framed by two air vents, the selected audio/navigation system is optimally located in the driver’s visual field on the dashboard. Within easy reach, climate controls are situated just below.

Similar to the original Beetle, the new car has an extra glove box integrated into the dash. The lid folds upward, while the standard glove box opens downward. Another classic feature: the optional auxiliary instruments above the selected audio/navigation system: oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge.

The “cathedral ceiling” dome roof of the New Beetle has been replaced with a sleek and sporty roofline. Front and rear passenger headroom remains plentiful. In the rear seating area, the longer roof section results in more space. The trunk is significantly larger, offering 10.9 cubic feet of space. A split-folding rear seat and a wide opening trunk lid ease loading and unloading.

Engine and Transmission

The 2012 Beetle will offer three engines: the 2.5L gasoline five cylinder, the 2.0L TDI® Clean Diesel and the 2.0L TSI® turbocharged gasoline engine. Transmission choices will include a 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed automatic on 2.5L models. Volkswagen’s acclaimed DSG® 6-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered on the TDI Clean Diesel and 2.0L TSI turbocharged gasoline models, while a 6-speed manual will come standard.

The 2012 Beetle 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel is the most fuel-efficient Beetle ever. The quiet, four cylinder 2.0L TDI Clean Diesel engine produces 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft of torque. It meets all U.S. emission limits and offers manufacturer estimates of 40 mpg highway, 29 mpg city, and 33 mpg combined.

Fuel economy values are also improved up to 10 percent over prior 2.5L five cylinder engine models. Mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, it offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. The optional 6-speed automatic offers manufacturer estimates of 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. The five cylinder engine produces 170 hp and 177 lb.-ft of torque.

The Beetle 2.0L TSI is the sportiest model offered. With 200 hp and 207 lb.-ft of torque, power delivery will remain smooth and direct across the rpm range. The four cylinder turbo engine is estimated to provide 30 mpg highway fuel economy. To ensure that power is applied properly in challenging conditions, the 2.0L TSI model features the XDS® cross differential (limited-slip) system. The system electronically monitors input from various wheel sensors and, in the event of slippage, transfers extra torque to the wheel or wheels with the most traction.

Premium Features

The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle will be available in two trim lines “Design” and “Sport.” Each has a unique character. The Beetle can also be customized with a wide choice of optional features. Key features include:

Radio-CD and radio-navigation systems. Standard in the Beetle is the RCD 310 sound system with 8 speakers (includes dual tuner). The premium VIII top audio system is the RCD 510 with integrated CD changer, interface for SD cards and touchscreen. For the first time ever, navigation will be offered in the Beetle, with the RNS 315 featuring a 5-inch touchscreen, CD player and SD card slot.

Panoramic roof. The transparent, panoramic tilt/slide glass sunroof is 80 percent larger than on the previous model. The insulating glass blocks 99 percent of UV radiation and 92 percent of heat energy.

Fender Premium Audio System. The 2012 Beetle will also offer concert quality sound with an optional Fender Premium Audio System equipped with an additional subwoofer and 400 watts of output power. Embedded in the vehicle design is proprietary Panasonic® speaker technology. The system covers the cabin with directional sound from front door speakers that generate imaging beyond the capabilities of traditional speaker designs. It cuts through the noise and other distractions with front dual voice coil speakers, with extended range for all musical genres. Those choosing this sound system also receive adjustable interior ambiance lighting.

Keyless Access. Volkswagen’s automatic keyless entry and starting system, which allows the driver to operate without a door or ignition key,is appearing for the first time in the Beetle. When one of the front door handles is touched, the system detects access authorization from a transmitter, then unlocks the Beetle and starts the engine with the push of a button.

BI-XENONTM headlights and LED daytime running lights. For the first time, the Beetle will be offered with Bi-xenon headlights. These will be available on future Beetle models, framing the xenon module on the outer perimeters of the headlights and serving as the daytime running lights and parking lights.

Safety

The 2012 Beetle features both active and passive safety. It includes Volkswagen’s advanced Intelligent Crash Response System, which initiates automatic safety protection in some types of collisions — the electrical supply to the fuel pump is shut off, the doors unlock and the hazard lights switch on. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is standard, as are driver and front passenger airbags and Side Curtain Protection® airbags in front and rear.

The 21st Century Beetle is also covered under the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. All scheduled maintenance is covered for the length of the New Vehicle Warranty – three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Additionally, all current Volkswagen vehicles use synthetic oil, which, when combined with state-of-the-art German engineering, eliminates the need for a 5,000 mile oil change, and allows owners to go farther between scheduled oil changes.

Mercedes brings Sexy to the Compact Segment with the new Concept A-class

Mercedes Benz has a plan to attend the Shanghai Auto Show, which will take place this month with an absolute fresh concept for a fabulous class looking template. Just as its name suggests, the Concept of class is basically a prototype study. This prototype evokes clearly how the company has developed to take on his rivals in the form of the Audi A3 and BMW 1 series. Tactics involve the company with this next generation model that is supposed to hit roads here in 2012.

To begin with, Mercedes is to ignore the silhouette of the widespread class sedan that resembles a minibus. In place of, the company accepted a more extravagant and sports looking two-box profile with a long hood and a roof line is low. The exterior details which are incorporated in the design have a strong influence of the more recent prototypes by the names of CLS Shooting Brake and more the F800.

Except the new nose of the car with the Mercedes grille so very obvious, the Concept of A-Class three doors also features as concave surfaces with scanning lines covering the whole of the body.

This apart from the technical highlights make inclusion of a radar based warning system that warns about the collision. This system is gifted with Adaptive braking assistance. Other innovative inclusions in the car include lamps run during the day, composed of 90 optical fibres with sleeves made of aluminum and are made in an arrangement in the shape of a wing placed within the projector.

In addition to the tailgate three door presented a preview by this concept, the Mercedes Benz officials have made a statement on the recent plan of the company to come with at least three versions more based on the architecture of the MFA class of sedan type.
